Italian Alps - Valle d'Aosta - July/August 2023
We stayed 1 night with Gus the bus in the city Aosta, 1 night in Gignod and the rest of the week in Etroubles.
The first day we bought a topo hiking map from the tourist info in Etroubles. Very friendly and helpful at the info centre. They took a lot of time to help us .....Our first hike to Bivacco Molline wasn't perfect. It was a hike were we had to look a lot for the markings....so much that we didn't get to the bivacco but after all a nice hike.
Besides the hike on top of the ski station Pila (Aosta city) to lago di Chamola which was a more leisurley hike that day we also hiked up to the Grand Tete(2463m). From the parking lot at Etroubles we climbed and descended 1200m. Very nice hike and a perfect pick-nick spot on top. We only saw 2 other hikers.
When we stayed in Gignod we took our mountainbikes and climbed a tarmac and gravel road to the Chaligne hut at 1943m. We had a lunch there and tryed the local dish Polenta with vegetables and beef.. and a dry white wine to make it complete....yummie yummie.
+1000m of climbing in a beautiful scenery, nice weather and no cars.....oooh yeah.
Here below is the link from the semi gravelride up to rif.Chaligne, starting in Gignod. The last 6km are on gravel.
The other link below is the Etroubles and surrounding villages ride with half on gravel and half on tarmac.
It was only 47km but a pretty hard day on the mountainbike with +1700m of climbing with a lot of rocks and grassy roads....it was worth the trip...for sure.
On our way back to Belgium we stopped at the Grand San Bernardo pass and did our last hike to lake fenetre and back.
