Beautiful Lapland.
In february 2026 we went on a short break to Lapland in Finland.
We booked our trip with Voigt travel who are specialists in these kind of things.
From Rotterdam, Transavia brought us to Kuusamo in the north of Finland. There was a small team from Ruka safaris waiting for us. It took us another 25 minutes with the bus to arrive in Iisakki village and the Safarihouse from Ruka.....
First thing was collecting our thermal overalls, gloves and shoes.....
We stayed the whole journey in an old priest lodge. Now it's called Papin Talo logde. A big wooden cabin in the forest close to the lake Myllylahti.
After a tasty lunch we hiked on the lake and around for an hour. They said that the ice was 60cm thick at this moment....No worries then.
The scenery here is so beautiful. Everywhere snow, also on the trees. And so silent. Not many houses.
In the evening we had a Finnish sauna beside the lake with guide Harrie.
He told us everything about the history, customs and some funny stories the sauna has...The Sauna is invented in Finland....it was a 'cool' experience.
The temperature outside the sauna was minus 25 degrees, inside around +80 degrees. We did two dips in the lake which felt amazing.....perfect start of our trip.
The second day, after a good breakfast we were scheduled for a 10K husky sledding. We were alone with the guide, so very lucky for us. It was cold but okay with the thermal overalls and a few layers beneath. Around minus 28 degrees that day.
For us this was one of our favorite because we were alone, we could go faster. Afterwards we stayed a while with the dogs and had a nice conversation/coffee with our guide. Nice people the Finns.
Lunchtime in Kontioluola and afterwards we did the lake hike again, we had spare time and we love to be in the nature.
After diner in restaurant Kontioluola which was beside the safarihouse it was time for evening snowshoeiing with guide Konstance and 6 other tourists. Imagine a clear sky, no light pollution on top of a hill.....Aurora borealis....Yeehaa...
The hike was 2.5 hours with hot berry juice on top of the hill beside the fire in a tipi tent.
We saw so many stars and the northern lights....What a hike....amazing.
On our last day we took the snowscooter for a spin with guide Giovanni. Again beautiful scenery.
We only crashed ones....lol. To much deep snow beside the track.
Back in the safarihouse we had a quick lunch and rented 2 electric fatbikes without guides.
Awesome ride. No people and so quiet.
And yes...again I (Dave 😉) crashed....downhill,.. full power on the bike....deep snow......I ended with a cold face and snow everywhere....haha....the bike was okay.
We ended our active day in the cold weather with a sauna.....pure relaxing.
In the restaurant that evening they served a delicious lappish diner which was also the end of our Lapland trip.
This kind of trip was already long on our list to do, finally we did it.....It was ten times more then what we expected.
It's a unique place in the world.....WOW
